I went to three different Primary Schools and settling in was difficult every time we moved to a new area. At Secondary School we stayed in one place and I thought it was great fun and made lots of friends. When I left school I worked as a receptionist until I got married in 1985. I then had three children, but unfortunately also several miscarriages, which was very distressing. During this time I took a variety of jobs so I could spend time with my children and worked in call centres, as a receptionist, in offices and shops.
I’d always wanted to be a teacher and after my children were all at school the time seemed right. I thought about it for two years and volunteered in classrooms to make sure that it was the correct choice of career for me. Then in 2001 I enrolled at Elmwood College to do an access course. I did my B. Ed degree in Primary Education at the University of Dundee and I now have a job as a newly qualified Primary School teacher for Dundee City Council.
Go for it!! It was the best thing I ever did and it has changed my life. If I can do it so can you.
During my studies I faced a number of challenges. I was a witness in a court case, had a biopsy in my throat, I lost my mother-in-law and my husband was made redundant. All of these factors made things difficult, but with the praise I was given by my tutors my confidence grew and I developed a much more positive view of life. Studying taught me that I have a lot of determination and can commit to achieving my goals. I feel rewarded, fulfilled and happy that I am now able to pursue the profession that I only dreamt about for so many years.
