Choosing a Learning Opportunity
If you’ve thought about your reasons for learning and have an idea of what you’d like to do, you need to find out what’s on offer and explore your options. When choosing the right learning opportunity you should consider the practicalities associated with the course you are thinking about doing such as:
- How much time you can devote to learning?
- How you would like to learn?
- What you might need to get accepted on your chosen course?
This part of Transitions will help you to think through some of the issues associated with choosing a learning opportunity and point you in the right direction to find out more.
What subject?
Why you want to learn may influence your choice of subject area. You may, for example, have a strong idea if you have a particular career goal in mind that you need a specific qualification to achieve. If your ambition is more general there are lots of subjects on offer in communities, colleges and universities that will help you to improve your skills and can be applied to a variety of careers.
If you’re not sure what sort of subject you would be interested in, you might want to think about your past experiences, things you’ve enjoyed doing, subjects you’ve read about or seen on television, evening classes you’ve taken, or places you’ve been where you think you might enjoy working. You may even want to try out different subject areas before you find out what suits you best. There are no right or wrong answers – it’s just a matter of choice.
